Mature self-regulation requires awareness of the demands of any given situation; consistent monitoring of our own thoughts, behavior and strategies; meta-cognition for how successfully we are meeting the demands of the situation; and the ability to flexibly change and shift from current functioning to accomplish a goal or to meet the needs of dynamic situations. Self regulation is not simply internal – context matters too! To self regulate children need to inhibit first responses, resist interference from irrelevant stimulation, and persist on relevant tasks even when they are not preferred. While young children need to steadily inhibit their responses as children mature into adolescence they need to self-regulate not only their behaviors but their emotions and problem-solving strategies. In this webinar we will: • Practice teaching students to develop situational awareness skills so they can “stop and read a room” and self-regulate their behaviors for a given situation. • Learn how to help students truly create mental visual imagery for the future and to perform a mental dress rehearsal to sequence actions towards a goal and hold that prospective memory in mind while they execute and self-monitor through tasks Understand how we can use the environment to develop stronger self regulatory skills in children • Provide techniques to improve cognitive flexibility so students can shift and problem solve to remain more self regulated.
