PRESENTED BY Elizabeth Hamblet, LDT-C, M.S. Ed., M.A.T.***Beginner/Intermediate Level***This presentation is the first in a four-part series on preparing students with disabilities for a successful transition to college. This first program discusses the legal foundations for how disability services operate in the postsecondary environment. The discussion will focus on a comparison of the different mandates delineated in the laws governing disability services at the high school vs. the college level and how these dictate what services colleges are and are not required to provide. The presentation will also discuss the four categories of accommodations colleges don’t have to provide and provide examples – some may surprise you! This presentation provides a helpful background for understanding subsequent programs regarding students’ responsibilities and rights at the college level, the documentation they will need to register for services, and the skills research shows students need to prepare for success.
