This training will provide participants with the necessary foundation or knowledge base for being able to effectively program for students with autism spectrum disorder. Participants will develop a through understanding of the unique processing and learning styles of people with ASD, which is essential to developing successful educational programs. Numerous “proven to work” instructional strategies will be shown, designed to address the unique learning needs of students with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, participants will learn how to reframe their thinking in addressing challenging behaviors exhibited by a person with ASD by understanding the behavior as a feature or characteristic of the person’s neurobiological disability of ASD. Most importantly, utilizing the instructional strategies shared in this training will address challenging behaviors in a proactive manner by reducing the stress, anxiety and frustration that may be experienced by students with ASD. Participants will:  Develop an understanding of the unique learning and processing styles of student’s with autism spectrum disorder.  Develop an understanding of why challenging behaviors occurs in people with autism spectrum disorder in relation to the features and characteristics of their disability.  Develop an understanding of the importance of using visual support strategies with people with autism spectrum disorder, particularly to address challenging behaviors.  Learn how to use and implement numerous visual support strategies to teach various skills and increase independent functioning for students with autism spectrum disorder.
